What's a domain and am I part of one?

A domain is a group of computers administered as a unit with common rules and procedures. Common domains at BU are PODS, BGM, Decker and Watson. Everyone on campus has an account in the PODS domain. Other domains are maintained for particular faculty or administrative functions and organizations.

What are some other computer accounts that are provided to faculty and staff?

  • BGM or other domains are used by some departments for departmental servers, departmental storage devices, printers, backup and other services.
  • Exchange accounts are used by some staff and faculty for e-mail and calendaring services in the Microsoft Exchange environment.
  • Oracle (or "Pegasus") accounts are used by some staff and faculty to access Financial and Human Resources administrative systems. Users have access and update privileges based on their roles on campus.
  • CICS accounts are used by some faculty and staff to access student records, student accounts, and course file administrative systems. Users have access and update privileges based on their roles on campus.
  • Resource 25 accounts are used to schedule space, such as classrooms, lecture halls, and conference rooms.
  • Kronos accounts are used for time accounting and management.
  • FAMIS accounts are used by Physical Facilities for project management.
  • BINGVMB accounts may be issued for specialized mainframe computational activities.
  • Cruncher accounts are issued for heavy computational purposes -- often involving statistical research. See Statistical Programming Support or Getting_Started_with_Cruncher.

I'm a student, when do my e-mail and bingsuns accounts expire?

Your e-mail and bingsuns accounts will deleted six months after your association with the university is ended. An e-mail notification will be sent to your BU email address to inform you when your accounts will be deleted.

When are faculty and staff accounts deleted?

All accounts should be deleted or suspended at the close of business on your last day worked. Employees who retire with at least ten years of service may keep their e-mail userid active.
